New radio show explores the American dream of being the boss

Do I have what it takes to own my own business? What business might be right for me? What does it cost? What does it involve? A new Boston-based radio show entitled "Let's Talk Franchising" debuts on WBIX-AM 1060 and explores the maze of business ownership opportunities. The program is on Monday evenings from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm. In addition to airing on WBIX-AM, 1060 on the radio dial, the show is "streams" live from the stations website www.WBIXonline.com. The show is hosted by Jim Coen, a seasoned franchise veteran of more than two decades. Coen is on the board of the New England Franchise Business Network and recognized as an authority of all aspects of franchising. He is the President of Franchise Perfection, a franchise brokerage and consultancy headquartered in Boston. The program includes insights and interviews with top franchisors from around the country. Initial shows will showcase franchises such as: Big Picture Framing; Charley's Grilled Subs; CartridgeWorld, Action International and Kabloom. Key resources to the franchising community will also be featured including National Franchise & Business Opportunities Show in partnership with the City of Boston, at the Bayside Expo Center and Steven V. Dubin of PR Works, a public relations and advertising firm. The show also includes an interactive segment called "Weekly Mail Bag" that addresses questions from listeners.

"Admittedly, franchising is not for everyone," says Coen, President of Franchise Perfection, sponsors of the event. He added, "While franchising is a safer way to start a business, no one should buy a franchise without doing their homework. The show is a good start to that research process."

Outsourcing, layoffs, reaching the glass ceiling, rising home equity, historically low interest rates and an emerging economy have helped increase the popularity of franchise businesses in New England. Franchising more than ever before, has an unprecedented opportunity to make a major positive impact on New England's future economy. The recent study conducted by PriceWaterhouseCoppers on behalf of the International Franchise Association (IFA) found that in New England over 750,000 jobs are a result of franchising, the total output is over 70 Billion dollars a year, and there are over 32,000 franchise establishments in the six New England States that comprise 40% of all retail sales. There are more than 3,000 franchise businesses to choose from in the US, priced as low as $25,000 to more than $1 Million.
